Use this area to list tools, equipment, websites, software or ideas that you have found useful for coaching or training horses and riders.

A fresh, creative web application that allows you to upload, enhance, and share digital video easily and quickly inside your web browser. One great benefit is that comments are able to be added to the video even after they are embedded in your website, blog or wiki. Useful for getting feedback on your training or coaching.

Pebblepad: An e'portfolio or electronic resume where you can ad text, photos, videos - even competition results, links to websites etc as a record of your achievements. This is a way of keeping track of all your infomation that may be useful when you want to produce evidence of your past experience -say for applying for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning - for qualifications you already have) or RCC (Recognition of Current Competency where you don't have formal qualifications but do have plenty of life experience). You may need this as part of your proof of competition experience for NCAS or NOAS (National Officiating Accreditation Scheme) applications. Jodie and Daniel are currently trialling this software.

Survey monkey: Is an online survey generator. You can use this to survey your students to see what they really want from you as a coach. You can even use it to generate quizzes. The free version provides lots of great features but you can also pay a small fee for more options. We sent out a survey to all of our elearning participants before we started our project & received 100% response so it must be pretty easy to use!

WotNews is a news monitoring system. Once you set up your subscription you can ad search words such as horse, equestrian, web tools and this service will send you links to stories relevant to your search words. It's a good way to see what stories make the press.

Elluminate Experience - An online lecture.
By the end of my “Elluminate” session I felt as though I would be able to do any course I wanted from my home. If anyone has been to the same conferences or meetings as I, they will know that I prefer to be an active participant. Attached (further down on this page under attachments) is my account of the session which was surprisingly just like being in a real lecture. The main benefits – I saved on time and fuel not having to get to the lecture and then get lost finding the right room, and I can revisit the lecture whenever I want to pick up on those bits I missed. Which to me is carbon efficient and a good use of recycling, and ultimately more time in my day to spend with the horse. This would be a great tool for our discipline to have access to for our coaches and administrators to save thousands on airfares and accommodation and actually “get together” more and achieve more for our sport. The International Society for Equitation Science is a not-for-profit organisation with the primary function of facilitating research into the training and welfare of horses. The idea of founding a Society devoted to equitation science had first been raised during discussions following the Havemeyer Foundation Workshop on Horse Behavior and Welfare in Iceland in 2002. Since then, equitation science has developed rapidly. The discipline combines learning theory, psychology and ethology in order to objectively examine the efficiency of different training methods. We are going to use this page to store lesson plans that are in the format required for NCAS equestrian assessments. If you want feedback for your lesson it's a good idea to start a thread at the bottom of the page.

Once you are satisfied that your lesson plan is okay you can add it to this area. Click on easy edit (sometimes you have to double click); add a title for your lesson then add your lesson as an attachment (you have to go out of the easy edit section to click on more tools to add your lesson as an attachment).

If you have taken a short video of the exercise and loaded it on YouTube or another video share site you can click on the widget in the easy edit toolbar and add a link to your video.

As soon as further information comes through on how horse owners can be assisted, we will post it online. Otherwise, please use your horse networks, support and help each other. After human needs; needs for horses would include hay, agistment, poly pipe to get water to troughs and fencing materials as early items. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This wiki was set up intially thanks to funding from the Flexible Learning Framework to allow a group of interested coaches to learn how to develop and use a wiki as a tool to encourage communication between coaches and to provide sample lesson plans and other tips for those preparing for a an equestrian coaching career.

Now the project is finished we aim to maintain the site as an on-going repository of coaching resources - and as a way for coaches, coach educators and coach candidates to share information and ideas. We encourage you to participate by putting up lesson plans or coaching tips (see the relevant pages); you can also let us know if you are available to help coach candidates (by adding your own website or blog info on the coaching connections page) or by entering the details on the calendar page if you are running clinics or training days - or just by giving feedback to the contributors.

What did the original project in 2008 cover?
E-Learning Project 2008

Original project goals and outcomes:

To investigate and trial a range of e-learning and social networking tools and processes suitable for incorporating into equestrian training and coaching
practices for Coaches, Coach Educators and Coach Candidates.
Develop an exemplar professional development model to demonstrate the value of partnerships and collaboration between coaches, business partners
and registered training providers
Empower equestrian students and coach candidates by providing options for distance learning and assessment.
Identify possible pathways for future incorporation of elearning strategies for accreditation/reaccreditation of equestrian federation officials

The project group met several times to discuss the issues affecting equestrian coaches and their students. We introduced a range of tools and options that could be incorporated into coaching and assessment activities.

We looked at options to value-ad to the services that coaches provide to their students. Many coaches have to travel to compete leaving their students with no help, are their tools that coaches can use to keep in touch with their students. We tested a few with possibilities.

Guest speakers came to demonstrate and discuss new tools and ideas in development that may make it easier to explain concepts and instructions to riders - how difficult is it for riders to learn how much tension is needed to have an effective contact on the reins, how do we really know how much force they are exerting when they use their legs or seat (mainly by the horse's response of course but could we use other tools to check the efficient use of their whole leg or to check for equal pressure from the rider and equal response from the horse) -other sports use technology to give better feedback-why not in equestrian sport?

We also looked at live video feedback technology and there are some exciting options in development here too. Have a look at the tools and websites page to see some of the items we investigated.

The guest speakers were full of information for us and hopefully we should be able to make something for ourselves from all this. The range of e-learning resources we have trialled certainly have applicability to improving our income stream as well as the services we can provide to our learners from a distance'

Use this page to add ideas that may help a particular horse or rider problem.

Your favourite exercise to improve a particular aspect of riding - even phrases or instructions you have heard that helped to clarify a direction or situation ( don't forget to acknowledge the source or person if it is not your own idea - that's only fair and courteous).

It can often be hard to give precise and concise information or instructions to riders who need instant feedback. Use the attachment or photo tool in the easy edit to add a more detailed plan or instructions with diagrams. I have set up a template to use for writing up your lesson plan, it's at the bottom of this page.
Use easy edit to ad a brief desciption about the exercise or idea you want to add; save it, then go to more tools near the easy edit icon to ad your attachment, video link, photos, photo story or power point. This way, the attachments will be saved in the attachment section at the bottom of this page, we can then add our own comments once we have had a look. This will save some space on the page. You can then add a thread in the thread section which is where others can comment on your ideas.
